Ogilvy on Tour - King's and Leeds

This time last week, I went to my alma mater (pretentious? moi?), King's College London, to present to a dedicated few (in a massive lecture theatre). Thanks to the twenty or so of you that came along and asked lots of questions/put up with some minor technical hitches and a bit of rambling/laughed at my 'jokes'/were generally enthusiastic. Oh and thanks for not making me feel as old as my walk through campus beforehand did ...

Unfortunately, I forgot to take some photos so we'll have to make do with this one of the lovely (and historic, as Americans would say) chapel.

Next up, on the Friday, Leeds. Hometown of fellow Fellow Tom Evans. After a detailed tour of the city enroute to campus, Tom and I (or as we began to start calling ourselves, with less irony than you might expect, TNT) rocked into the careers services room (the attractive 'Dales Suite') with nothing but a powerpoint and a dream.

About fifty of you showed up (big play), and witnessed the magic. In short, it was the performance of a lifetime - the onstage chemistry electric. No rehearsals man, we didn't need it - we just rolled with the vibe, adlibbing and interjecting like a couple of old pros. Truly in the zone. Everyone was very enthusiastic and inquisitive, and after a bit of reticence, someone stepped up for some powerpoint karaoke, which was excellent and deserved more time.

Again, we forgot to take photos, but were on such a natural high after the gig that it's hardly surprising. We even forgot to sign off with Tina Turner's 'Simply The Best', in a nod to The Office

Oh well, next time. Next time.

Ogilvy on Tour - University of Warwick

First stop on the Ogilvy Uni Tour – Warwick University. Having woken up 5:30am to get our train Sophia and I were a little knackered by the time we reached Coventry, proven by us leaving one of the laptops on the train. Luckily we noticed just before the train left for Brum and managed to delay it by 5 mins as we searched for ‘Ogilvy Loan Laptop no.2’. Followed by an interesting taxi ride with a cabbie who was just slightly obsessed with Asian people and canoes (random), we finally made it to campus and set up shop between the National Audit Office and some energy company we’d never heard of.

I think our Warwick students will agree that our budget stand looked rather nice. Definitely intriguing as loads of people chatted to us just to work out who we were - I have to admit the Abercrombie and Fitch stall had me more than a little intrigued! Having to stand for a whole day saying the same thing over and over sounds pretty tiresome, but we had a good mix of people coming to say hi which made the day absolutely fly by. Overall a good turn out and definitely met some potential Fellows, as well as some 2009 Summer Schoolers.

Three Things I learned about Warwick:

1. It’s not in Warwick.

2.They do a delightful bacon ciabatta.

3. Warwick students have ‘good chat’ (Hollie ghetto term for ‘very friendly and engage in delightful conversation’), perfect for our industry, so a load of em better apply!

Obama uses the iPhone as his latest campaigning weapon

On the mobile theme, the Obama campaign has continued their web 2.0 / mobile marketing campaign by developing an application for the Apple iPhone.

Previously they have used their wonderfully designed website to gather support and supporter information, then continued this by announcing the V-P nomination by SMS. The new application provides up to the minute information on the campaign and Obama's point of view and policies.

It also uses the GPS technology built into the iPhone to locate the nearest local recruiting office or campaign centre. The application then can identify, via the phone's contacts, which of their friends are currently in swing states. The application then asks the phone owner to contact their friends and to record the response (interested, not interested or already voted).

This is certainly a step forwards in mobile marketing and so far the statistics indicate that thousands of calls have been made by users that have downloaded the application. Obviously the supporters who have downloaded the application are by nature involved active supporters but this is a very clever way of continuing to use this power of many to campaign on Obama's behalf.

The influence of the application can be debated, but at the very least it is a interesting way to use technology to target effectively and promote via trusted sources (in this case using the friends own network).

Mmmm... Tasty

Over on the Getting Into Advertising page, we've just posted a video about that very subject ("Oooh 'int we nice" etc.). The above image is not in anyway related to the video, but rather (tenuously) to something rather tasty. Delicious, perhaps.

Yes, a plethora of hypertextual goodness awaits you, dear reader - please click here to be transported to my del.icio.us links, which cover a wide range of cool subjects, like advertising, arts and music, great digital work, blogs aplenty, trends and technology. Inspiration

If you're in London on Thursday the 16th of October then you could do a lot worse than checking out Night of the AdEaters, an evening of great ads from around the world organised by the IPA and Thinkbox.

Inspiration galore for applications and interviews. Plus, it's only £10 with a student card.

It's a small world after all...

Google Analytics has to be one of the coolest inventions ever. A little nerdy, I admit, but it's just so interesting to see where all the hits to our blog are coming from. So far, we've got the UK, the US, Vietnam, Malaysia, France, Romania, Germany, and 15 other countries.

But my favourite has to be a couple of folks from Douglas on the Isle of Man...

Gura mie eu for taking a look around!
