Say "hello" to
Hollie

Fellowship year
2007-2010
Current role & company
Account Manager, Ogilvy & Mather Advertising
How has the fellowship helped you?
When I started out I knew I wanted to work in communications, but wasn’t sure where exactly. I actually thought PR might be for me. The Fellowship allowed me to work across a range of disciplines, gain a huge amount of experience which then helped me realise that advertising was for me… so here I am
What have you done since?
My last year of the Fellowship was in Advertising and I loved it, so I stayed put but swapped a few accounts. I now work on Toblerone and Barbie. Ogilvy gives you plenty of opportunities to do stuff beyond your day job. So I’ve helped create our first agency magazine, redecorated part of the office (seriously), been involved in Ogilvy Labs bits and bobs, and have just launched the Ogilvy Gallery which is now home to artwork created by us and looks fricking awesome if I do say so myself
One piece of advice
Visit Ogilvy.co.uk. I know it sounds obvious, but the amount of times I’ve interviewed someone and they can’t even name one of our campaigns... Instant ‘no’. So do your research, know what we do, know which campaigns you like and don’t be afraid to have an opinion on our work.

Say "hello" to
Rachael

Fellowship year
Joined September 2005
Current role & company
Account Director, Ogilvy PR in New York
How has the fellowship helped you?
The fellowship helped me to understand the whole marketing mix and helped me to choose the right career path for me. When I graduated I applied for a range of marketing and advertising jobs, but no PR jobs, PR always appealed but I wasn’t sure it was right for me. On the fellowship I fell in love with PR and have never looked back. My cross discipline experience has been really helpful, I not only understand what the ad guys are talking about, but I can look at client problems in a more channel neutral way.
What have you done since?
After I completed my last placement in May 2007 I took up a permanent position in Ogilvy PR. I worked in the London office for four years on everything from Unilever laundry products to a low carbon restaurant and luxury home interiors brand. I got a great grounding in the PR discipline, getting to grips with media relations, events, digital influence and PR strategy. In August 2011 I transferred to Ogilvy PR’s New York office.
One piece of advice
Seize every opportunity, if you want to do something, ask, people will usually try to help you make it happen. And don’t pre-judge your placements or your clients, some of the best, most interesting and rewarding projects I have worked on were the ones that didn’t sound very glamorous at first.

Say "hello" to
Paul

Fellowship year
I joined O&M London as a graduate trainee in 1987
Current role & company
CEO for O&M Asia Pacific
How has the fellowship helped you?
The basic grounding in all disciplines and departments helped us to understand the real value and contribution of the agency to the clients business - and more importantly meant we hit the ground running when assigned to our accounts. It also created some very long lasting friendships.
What have you done since?
Answering this question makes me feel old :-), I worked with O&M London till 1990 - then moved to Asia with Lintas where I worked in Thailand (2 years) and South Korea (2 years). I was then transferred to Colombia - and remember saying good-bye to my parents on the way to the airport when the news of the shooting of the Colombian defender that had scored an own goal in the world cup came through - my father said 'whatever you do don't lose an account !“ After 18 months in Bogota I moved to Sao Paulo where I was CSD for Lintas for 5 years before joining Y&R as the MD. From there I was part of the start up of Brazil's first Free ISP - an incredible learning experience. In late 2003 Miles Young invited me back to Ogilvy to come to Hong Kong to run the gbm for Asia. From there in 2006 I ran O&M Advertising in Asia and then in late 2008 became the regional CEO.
One piece of advice
I think David said it best: "Raise your sights ! Blaze new trails !! Compete with the immortals !!!"
One last thing : remember Ogilvy is the best network in the world - use it - travel - be adventurous .

Say "hello" to
Rory

Fellowship year
The year following my joining OgilvyOne in September 1988
Current role & company
Vice Chairman, Ogilvy Group London
How has the fellowship helped you?
Immeasurably. Even 20 years on, it is immensely valuably to have had some experience, however fleeting, of most of the departments in the agency.
What have you done since?
Been a Planner for two years, 20 years as a copywriter, head of copy, creative director, and so forth. I am still at heart a copywriter before all else.
One piece of advice
Become good at two or more things. However good you are at one thing, there is someone in the world better at it than you. But if you are really quite good at several things, you may just be irreplaceable.

Say "hello" to
Laurie

Dove, UNICEF, Huggies
Highlight of Fellowship
The people. Being able to work with and around intelligent and kind planners has already had a huge influence on me.

If you put your hand up to do something, follow through on it!

Say "hello" to
Luke

Fellowship year
1st year (2011)
Current role & company
Account Executive, Ogilvy One
Brands you've worked on
American Express
Highlight of Fellowship
Our training was brilliant. It was a complete immersion into everything communications looked at with a pair of Ogilvy glasses on (these are handed out when you sign your contract).
One piece of advice
Have an opinion, be friendly and be interested in everything. There are so many people to learn from and so much you get access to so make as much of it as you can.

Say "hello" to
Pete

Fellowship year
Current role & company
Account Executive, Ogilvy PR
Brands you've worked on
IBM, Chengdu Tourism, American Express, and loads of New Business pitches.
Highlight of Fellowship
Having my excited first day nerves eased by meeting the Group Chairman first thing in the morning, him then describing the Fellows as his 'secret ninja force'.
One piece of advice
Don't put in an email what you can say better and faster in person, but equally, resist then using the phrases 'touch base', 'going forward' and 'deep dive' all in one sentence. It's a tricky balance.

Say "hello" to
Rebecca

Fellowship year
1st year (2011)
Current role & company
Account Executive, Ogilvy One
Brands you've worked on
British Airways
Highlight of Fellowship
Blagging my way on stage at the Royal Opera House as part of 'resourcefulness training'. Debating behavioural economics with Rory over lunch.
One piece of advice
Take time out to feed your brain and inspire yourself, whether that's heading to an exhibition at the V&A or watching a trashy 80's movie. You never know when you'll need to draw on something weird and wonderful for a fresh idea.

Say "hello" to
Savine

Fellowship year
1st year (2012)
Current role & company
Account Executive, Ogilvy & Mather Advertising
Brands you've worked on
BP
Highlight of Fellowship
Getting to know my fellow fellows, resourcefulness training, and just generally being able to work on an Olympic Sponsor account in 2012!
One piece of advice
Don't be afraid to ask questions. Write it down! And by 'it' I mean everything and anything that seems even vaguely useful, it probably will be.

Say "hello" to
Victoria

Fellowship year
1st year (2011)
Current role & company
Planner, Ogilvy Action
Brands you've worked on
S C Johnson
Highlight of Fellowship

Meeting such a huge amount of ludicrously interesting people. However this does come with the unfortunate self-realisation that I am comparably quite boring.

Just kidding.

One piece of advice
If you have something to say, say it – don’t just keep quiet. It might actually turn out to be useful!

Say "hello" to
William

Highlight of Fellowship
Meeting a lot of interesting people
One piece of advice
Be proactive. Don't wait for work or projects to be given to you, find them! Also, the lifts on the 9th floor stop working after 6.30pm, so don't stand in the corridor for 5 minutes waiting for one.

Say "hello" to

Who does what in an agency?

You’ll find most big agencies have 3 main departments: Account Management, Planning, and of course, Creative. Here’s a quick look at who does what.
